SP supports Jaswant`s decision not to quit PAC chairmanship

Samajwadi Party on Wednesday supported former BJP leader Jaswant Singh`s decision not to step down as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.

New Delhi: Samajwadi Party on Wednesday supported
former BJP leader Jaswant Singh`s decision not to step down as
chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), saying rules
don`t say the committee should necessarily be headed by a
representative of the main opposition party.

"As per regulations, the chairman of the PAC should be
a representative from the opposition. However, it is not
necessary that the person should be from the main opposition
party (BJP). So, there is no harm if Jaswant Singh has refused
to step down as PAC chairman. Even if he is no more with
BJP, he is still in the opposition," SP general secretary Ram
Gopal Yadav said here.

SP had given feelers to Singh to join the party, though
its leadership said that no formal offer had been made.

Earlier this week, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj had met
Singh and had asked him to step down as PAC chairman. He,
however, refused saying he will quit only if directed by
Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.
