New Delhi: ITBP Chief Vikram Srivastava was
today appointed as Director General of CRPF, world`s largest
para military force, in place of A S Gill who retires on
Sunday.
57-year-old Srivastava, a 1973 batch IPS officer of
UP cadre, will have a tenure till March 31, 2012.
He was appointed as Director General of Indo Tibetan
Border Police on May 7, 2008.
Gill, 1972 bath IPS officer, had become CRPF in
February last year.
Director General of National Disaster Relief Force
(NDRF) R L Bhatia, IPS officer of 1974 batch from UP cadre,
will take over from Srivastava as ITBP Chief.
The names of the two were cleared by the Appointments
Committee of Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,
officials said.
The appointment of Srivastava comes at a time when the
Centre is preparing a long battle against Naxals.
CRPF is the main central para-military force which is
coordinating anti-Naxal operations in various states along
with the state police.
