New Delhi: The HRD Ministry today initiated
an inquiry to ascertain how three unauthorised persons,
claiming to represent it on a fact-finding mission, visited a
Kolkata-based school for probing the suicide of a student.
The ministry is contemplating legal action against the
three persons who went to La Martinere for Boys yesterday and
claimed before the media that they had "sought a report" from
its authorities on the suicide of class VIII student Rouvanjit
Rawla days after he was caned by his principal.
HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said he had not appointed
any committee to probe the matter and also did not have any
conversation with any of three persons in question.
Sibal asked officials to find out details of the matter
and explore legal action against the three persons since they
"misrepresented the ministry", a HRD ministry source said.
Ramesh Bhattacharjee, Anthony Arun Biswas and Dilip Dutta
visited the prestigious school yesterday.
"The ministry has not appointed any committee. It seems
they have misrepresented the HRD Ministry. We are exploring
legal action against them," the source said.
The ministry asked La Martinere and the Indian
Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CISCE), the
affiliating board, to submit report on the issue of the visit
of the three persons.
Responding promptly, the school said it got a call from
the Shakespeare Sarani Police Station that an HRD Ministry
team will visit the school and it should be supplied
information.
Bhattacharjee, who claimed to be the head of the probe
team, gave a visiting card with national emblem on it. The
card said he was a member of the HRD Ministry`s Department of
Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.
"There is no such position in the ministry," an HRD
ministry official said.
He noted that use of the national emblem on the visiting
card amounts to offence.
