Telangana centerpiece of Congress’ vote bank politics: BJP

Bjp leader Syed Shahnawaz Hussain on Tuesday said the Congress is indulging in vote bank politics in working towards the creation of a new state of Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh.

New Delhi: Bjp leader Syed Shahnawaz Hussain on Tuesday said the Congress is indulging in vote bank politics in working towards the creation of a new state of Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh, and accused the ruling party of not having the best interests of the country in mind when taking the decision.

“The Congress wants to give the people of Telangana the new state under its rule, but also wants to address Andhra through Parliament. The ruling party must have the best interests of the country in mind, but the Congress is making the decision on Telangana for votes instead, "the BJP leader said.

The Congress has used Telangana as the centerpiece of their politics of self-interest. … We work in the interest of the country, while the Congress works in the interest of gathering votes,” Hussain said.
On July 30, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) had announced their decision to carve out Telangana from Andhra Pradesh, fulfilling a long-standing demand. The process for the formation of the new state, however, could take up to six months because of the constitutional procedures to be followed.

Hussain, however, described Congress decision as flimsy from the beginning and also added that Finance Minister P. Chidambaram had admitted that the decision was still in process.

“The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has taken the decision to create Telangana but yesterday P. Chidambaram himself said at the Floor of the House that the Bill will come into the Cabinet, that it is a long process and that how can discussions be taken forth if the government hasn’t taken a decision yet,” Hussain said.
On Monday, the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha were prematurely adjourned after some members shouted slogans in the Well of the House for a united Andhra Pradesh, while another group made a demand for the creation of Bodoland as a separate state.

After the decision to carve out Telangana from Andhra Pradesh was made public, the demand for creation of other states has grown louder throughout the country. There have been demands and protests to divide Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Assam and West Bengal.
