Tharoor says `sorry` for cattle class remark New Delhi: Reacting to the controversy over his "cattle class" remarks, Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor on Thursday night said he was "sorry" for hurting sentiments and that his words had been misunderstood.

Tharoor ran into trouble for a message he posted on the social networking site Twitter in which he said sarcastically in response to a query that he would travel "cattle class out of solidarity with all our holy cows!"

Congress Spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan had termed the phrase as "unacceptable" and said Tharoor was perhaps not conscious of local sensitivities since he was new to Indian politics.

The Minister, who is in Liberia on an official visit, tweeted late night on Thursday that he had, "learned belatedly of fuss over my tweet replying to journo's query whether I would travel to Kerala in 'cattle class'."

He pointed out that the phrase "cattle class" was used in the query, which he just repeated.

"It's a silly expression but means no disrespect to economy travellers, only to airlines for herding us in like cattle. Many have misunderstood," he tweeted.

He admitted that if the phrase when translated into Malayalam sounded worse, especially if taken out of context. "To those hurt by the belief that my repeating the phrase showed contempt: sorry," said Tharoor.

He also explained that the word "holy cows" was not referring to any individuals. "Holy cows are not individuals but sacrosanct issues or principles that no one dares challenge. Wish critics would look it up."

The Minister said that he had learnt a lesson from the episode. "I now realise I should not assume people will appreciate humour. You should not give those who would willfully distort your words an opportunity to do so."

Besides, Tharoor also mentioned that he had excellent meetings with the Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and other dignitaries. He is the first minister in 38 years to visit the West African nation.

Initially when he was taken as minister in the cabinet,I felt that inclusion is graceful, but now the experience of the last few statements from his side are so embarrassing that haughtiness, ego are all the traits of his personality.

Shashi Tharoor does not desrve to be in the cabinet for even a moment. When economy class pasengers in airline are cattle class for him, what will be his opinion about those travelling in 2nd class in train, those living below poverty line. Did he gave this opinion to his voters when he approached them during election. This indicates that he is acting agaist the manifasto on the basis of which voters elected him. He should immediately resign from cabinet as well as Loksabha and get a fresh mandate airing his actual views to the voters.

while it is okay for us to comment angrily on tharoor on the incomplete info media feeds u sjust to rake up a controversy, its also an occacion to see who are your foes. tharoor will soon learn he does have enemies aka jayanthi natrajan who jumped and criticized him. not all like his express elevation. well said tharoor by clarifying, but sadly u will also have to learn that this will not be publicized like your earlier statement as they to do not rake controversy. sadly this is indian media and politics, very unfortunately

PP TALWAR - India
First time MP and MOS, External Affairs Ministry, Shashi Tharoor shoud be more cautious in future in making unthoughful and slanderous remarks against any one, including the congress party on whose ticket he has won the Lok Sabha election. The expression of `sorry` for his indecent remarks agaisnt the congress party`s culture and code of conduct should put the matter at rest now.

Human not Cattle - Not in cattle field
Hi,

I travel economy class. I don`t like to be called as cow. Have any one forgetten what Mr. Ronen Sen said to our politicians. All these burocrats who are worked long time out of India, has typical western mind set and call us Indians as cows, dogs, headless chicken. One should oppose it. By saying sorry Mr.Tharoor only accepted his mistake. But still his attitude has not changed. We don`t want to be ruled people like him. He must resign in solidarity with other head less chickens.

It`s sad to see that people of Tharoor`s capability have to be apologetic about their intelligence and sense of humour in a political establishment. This episode goes to illustrate that `fact` that political organizations in our country are for the `cattle` brained, not smart people.
