Threat to Goa Home Minister`s family "fake": BJP

Panaji: Terming the threat to the life of
Goa Home Minister Ravi Naik and his family as "fake", BJP
today alleged that the claim was an attempt to divert public
attention from the drug nexus case.

"Naik`s claim that there is a threat to his family is
fake. It`s an attempt to divert public attention from the drug
nexus case in which his son Roy is embroiled," BJP`s Goa
spokesman Rajendra Arlekar told reporters here.

Arlekar said that Naik, as well as the police, should not
hide the exact threat perception and the reasons for which his family is being targeted.

"Director General of Police B S Bassi has confirmed the
threat but they are not disclosing who is after the Home
Minister and his family`s life," he said.

"Who are threatening him? Is it something to do with drug
lobby or some petty goons?," he asked.

Naik and his family`s security was escalated last week,
after police received information about a contract killer
being hired to eliminate the minister and his family.

Arlekar also demanded Naik`s resignation for shielding
the policemen and accused involved in the drug nexus case.

"Atala (Israeli drug baron Yaniv Benaim) has already
reached his home country. We suspect that police issued a red corner notice against him only after ensuring that he had
safely crossed the country`s border," the BJP leader said
referring to the report of a web portal, which claimed that
Atala was sighted in his home town in Israel.

Naik should step down as a Home Minister so that police
can impartially inquire the drug nexus case, Arlekar said.

"We knew that police will not be able to do an impartial
inquiry and hence had demanded CBI probe," he said.
