Toilets more important than temples: Jairam Ramesh

New Delhi: Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh has created a controversy by saying that toilets are more important than temples in India.

Addressing a gathering of Panchayat-level workers on Friday, Ramesh said as per The Indian Express, “Sixty-four percent of Indians defecate in open spaces, which is a global record. It is now reckoned as the main cause of India’s malnutrition problem.”

Praising the sanitation model of Hivre Bajar and Ralegan Siddhi, the Union Minister said every village in the country should replicate such model.

The BJP today hit out at Ramesh for his comment, saying he should not make such statements which hurt the "fine fabric of faith and religion" in the country.

“Making of toilets and having faith in a religious place of worship are two different things. India is a multicultural country where we should have unblemished faith in a temple, a mosque, a gurdwara or a church. You cannot juxtapose the two," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

He alleged Ramesh has made a political statement here and advised him to instead concentrate "salvaging the battered image of the UPA government".

Congress also appeared to disapprove of the Rural Development Minister’s comment saying "we respect the sanctity of every religious place".

“We respect the sanctity of every religious place irrespective of the community it belongs to. I do not know the statement attributed to Ramesh. Perhaps it could have been distorted and he is in the best position to explain."

"Congress party believes in sarvadharmasambhav. Equal respect for all religions. Equal respect for all religious places", party spokesman Manish Tewari said reporters.

Yes. He is 100% correct. even in Temple premises public toilet usage are very poor.in transport and all public gathering place very worst behaviour is going on in our beloved country. so , Toilet habit is very important than worshiping habit. so I am supporting Jayram`s view. Every service minded will support his view only. then arguing about that words. meaning is important.

the minister is right. the use of the term temple is reference to all religions concerned. we seem to make issue with every thing ,no one wonder the country is getting worse by the day. every statement is disected to its core to check the political correctnes, instead of wasting time like this the politicians should just go build some toilets in their constituencies for the good of the country.in general the poloticians try to keep their followers poor ,otherwise they lose the ``vote bank``. any development will change the out look of these poorer sections and the demographics will change and that means trouble in the next elections.so this is `` planned underdevelopment`` and will continue like this until the public realise and get rid of these useles politicians and elect younger educated /proffessionals as their leaders for future.

If our dear minister says in addition to temples, Masjid`s and Churches he will get killed like US ambassador in Libya, any congress and never ever dare to speak like that .Because they are secular only when they need to support Muslims and other minoroties

There is nothing to make it big issue. It is a message quite a satire on people being crazy about temple visits who never see cleanliness as basic for holy purpose. Gods live where there is cleanliness. People not the god will come to make temples and the earth a cleaner place. BJP needs to exercise restraint from shouting out at nothing.

The chatu Minister deliberatly said temples and avoided mosques and churches. They want to provok the Hindu organizations and hide their own sins. ( Robert wadra case !!) . It will provok BJP and other Hindu Organizations and the congracies will get the chance to call them non secular in coming elections. All these chatu netas are indirectly hurting millions of Hindus. Jairam keep in mind - if you get to the hands of aam public you will be washed better than clothes. Maadar chod!!

The coward can never have courage to make such type of comments bracketing the religious places or places of worships of other religion. he knows the results. before the adherents of that religion issue fatwa his party would issue marching orders for him.

toilets are used to clear out physical garbage. temples are helpful to us in clearing our mental garbage. so it is inappropriate to say that toilets are more important.
