Uma Bharti appeals for clean Ganga

Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti urged political parties as well as the general public to join the campaign to clean Ganga river and make it pollution-free along its course from Gangotri in Uttarakhand to Gangasagar in West Bengal.

Patna: Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti on Sunday urged political parties as well as the general public to join
the campaign to clean Ganga river and make it pollution-free
along its course from Gangotri in Uttarakhand to Gangasagar in
West Bengal.

The pollution in Ganga warrants joint action by the
society and the government in view of the socio cultural and
economic significance of the river, Bharti told reporters
here.
Bharti said she recently met Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh and Union Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam
Ramesh with a list of proposals for making the river
pollution-free.

Among the proposals were declaring Ganga a national
river and enacting a legislation for imposing heavy penalties
on those polluting the river.

There should also be review of sustainability of hydel
power plants proposed in the Himalayan belt, mining and other
development works being carried out in and around the river
through its course, the BJP leader said.
Bharti said she would organise a human chain from
Gangotri to Gangasagar to highlight the condition of the river
and lead a `sansad gherao` at Parliament to put pressure on
the Centre to work for cleaning the river.

Her outfit Lok Bharati spearheading the campaign
`Samagra Ganga` will organise an international seminar in New
Delhi to be attended by delegates from across the world.
