Aligarh (UP): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday hit out at the Mayawati government over its land acquisition policy, saying it was killing farmers for making justified demands.
Addressing thousands of farmers at a ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ here, Rahul said the UP government was not listening to farmers and denying them rightful compensation for land acquired from them.
Rahul admitted that the existing land laws were outdated and there was a need to change them. He assured the farmers that the UPA government will introduce a new Land Acquisition Bill in Lok Sabha.
He however added that by just changing the law things will not change, as the same law applies to Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. In Haryana, the government pays fair price to farmers, informs them in advance about their land being acquired, he said, adding the problem in UP was that the government doesn’t talk to farmers as its intent is doubtful.
And when farmers try to talk to government, they receive bullets in return, he added.
“I have not met any farmer who is against development. He is ready to give up his land for the country’s development. The only thing he demands is a fair price for his land,” Rahul told the rally.
He added that in Uttar Pradesh, farmers were angry as they were being denied fair price for their land which was being acquired for apartments, golf course and racing track.
Hitting back at his critics who called his four-day padayatra as “nautanki” (drama), Rahul said, “I believe politicians need to talk to people… go amongst them.”
Thanking the farmers of UP for hosting him, the Congress general secretary said what he has learnt over the past four days he could not have learnt in Parliament.
