New Delhi: Chief Secretaries of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday appeared before the Supreme Court on a summon issued by it for their failure to file affidavits on implementation of its direction on police reforms.
Appearing before a bench of justices GS Singhvi and V Gopala Gowda, the Chief Secretaries expressed regret for the delay in responding to the court`s order and assured it that the issue of police reform would be taken seriously.
The bench also directed all the states to file their responses on the problems faced by them in implementing the apex court`s judgement on police reforms which was passed seven years ago.
Sending a clear message that the indifference of state governments on implementing its slew of directions on police reforms would not be tolerated, the apex court had on July 16 directed the top bureaucrats of the four states to appear before it.
The court had on April 25 directed the Chief Secretaries to file affidavits relating to compliance of the apex court`s directions on police reforms and constituting State Security Commission(SSC).
The apex court had earlier also expressed its annoyance with the approach of state governments to non-compliance of its directions on police reforms.
