New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh tops the chart and
Bihar is second in the list of states which have reported
polio cases over a period of three years.
However, Bihar, which reported a total of 594 cases, has
no data available to show the targets for polio immunisation
which the state had set for itself, as a result of which the
shortfall in achievements is also not available, according to
an audit of the National Rural Health Mission by the
Comptroller and Auditor General of India.
Uttar Pradesh, which reported 984 cases, had set a
target of 116,780,000 immunisations out of which it had
achieved all in the period between 2005 and 2008.
Among other states, Haryana reported 26 cases,
Uttarakhand 20, Delhi 12, Punjab 10 and Rajasthan four.
As far as target achievement for vaccination is
concerned, Arunachal Pradesh has the highest shortfall of
81.53 per cent, Madhya Pradesh 17.64 per cent, Sikkim 15.63,
Meghalaya 8.71 and Orissa 4.01 per cent.
Uttar Pradesh had the best performance with a zero
shortfall between target and achievement as far as vaccination
was concerned.
The Government has from this year introduced the bivalent
polio vaccine for immunisation. The initiative will begin on a
pilot basis from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
