‘US aiming to corner Lanka at UN rights session’

Colombo: A close ally of Sri Lankan President on Monday claimed that US was working to "haul" Mahinda Rajapaksa before the international court in the Hague over war crimes.

"The US has got busy collecting signatures to move the resolution against Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council session in March", Wimal Weerawansa, the minister of engineering services and construction told a public gathering at Matale in the central province.

"They (US) will frame charges against Sri Lanka for war crimes in order to haul president (Rajapaksa) before the international court in the Hague", Weerawansa stressed.

"The public must stand as one against this US action," he said. Weerawansa, the leader of the nationalist National Freedom Party (NFF) is a key ally of the president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The NFF leader's comments came ahead of the impending Sri Lanka visits by key US officials, Steven J Rapp, the Ambassador at large on war crimes and Robert O'Blake, the Assistant Secretary of State for Central and South Asian affairs.

I doubt this would ever happend. After enjoying a nice vacaion and enjoying some ``nice Sri Lankan`` treats, these diplomats would certainly make a big ``U`` turn and say the current Regime is doing a wonderfull job of reconciliation and development. They may even certify that SL`s human rights have improved to be the best in the world and there is no need to persue SL any more. If we believe these pundits to provide justice to the genocide, we will dye without seeing the light of it. God Save the Eelam Tamils.

Tamils are demanding for an independent International human rights and war crimes investigation and impunity must be removed from the Sri Lankan leaders to face independent trails for justice and accountability.

It,s premature to talk about Hague. UN Expert Panel reported 40,000 civilians were killed by bombing and shelling. Only an independent investigation will conclude the extent of the crime. The victims must be done justice. The real number of victims and their names must be established in order to pay the last respects to the dead and the loved ones must know for certain if the thousands presumed to be missing are also dead or not. If the guilty accepts their guilt it will pave way for genuine reconciliation.
