US fighter jets out of MMRCA race: Report Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: The bids by American aerospace giants for the coveted USD 10 billion medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) deal of the Indian Air Force has been declared ineligible after technical evaluation, reports claimed Thursday.

As per the details published by a leading English daily, the government has found Lockheed Martin’s F-16INSuper Viper and Boeing’s F/A-18 Super Hornet did not match up with the competition in technical trials.

French Rafale and Eurofighter are the only two fighter aircraft found suitable and have made it to the next round. Russia’s MiG-35 and the Sweden’s Gripen were the other two contenders for the multi-billion deal.

Hence, only Rafale and Eurofighter would be asked to submit commercial bids.

Government’s decision to call only two eligible companies for the next round was impelled by the fact that commercial bids for all six players were to expire by the end of this month. However, the government did have the option of asking all the six contenders to extend their commercial bids and keep the suspense alive.

However, it decided not to prolong the decision making process keeping in mind the deep interest shown by the political establishment of the bidding nations.

The deal was very significant for the US administration with President Barack Obama taking it up took this up with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, when the former toured India. The Obama administration later wrote a letter to Prime Minister highlighting how much importance it attached to this contract.

The MMRCA deal was discussed at the meeting of the Indo-US Defence Policy Group headed by the Defence Secretary on the Indian side.

Importantly, the Defence Ministry had set a deadline of March next year to complete the entire negotiation process for the MMRCA contract. In view of this deadline, it is imperative for the government to do the technical evaluation and take a decision before the expiry of the commercial bids.

Excellent and judicious decision by India. This came through only because a spotless clean politician like Antony is at the helm of Indian defence ministry. No one else could withstand the dirty tactics from the Americans in promoting their ageing F16. This aircraft (F16) is being used by our arch rival Pakistan for many years and technically it is the most inferior product in group of 6. Ofcouse F18 was a good option, but considering our requirement being medium scale product with technology transfer, Americans were rated much below the Europeans. Unarguably, Eurofighter / Dassault Rafale will be a better product for India in the coming 30 years of use.

IAF and MOD is making a mistake of leaving out super hornet-Boeing for the final price and off-set clause negotiations. Boeing has the ability to
bring in TOT in the fighter jet as well in other segments like commercial RTA, helikopeter ,engines
and in the development of our own advanced medium attack fighters.Leaving the EADS and Dasault alone in the final negotiations will be very determintal
to us since they have the habit of becoming inflexible in prices and TOT.Which Dassault has already proved in the negotiation of mirage-2000 upgrade talks.Beware of them or you shall get squeezed.

The IAF guys are best to ealuate what is best for India for the next 20-30 years keeping in mind upgrading of Chinese Air Force and Chinese imediate threat in wakr of reports of hinese troopon in POK and new airfields around N-E India.
However, we should give more importance now to build our own fighter jets and in mass production and at the same time relax some of the Air Force entrance tests.

Italy has 40 percent stake in eurofighter.Shortlisting Rafale is Red Herring for gullible Indians.I doubt if this deal will ever come through. The IAF must stand firm on their requirement and not scumb to political pressure. No one can possibly overlook Grippen or F16 in this deal. Is this deal going the 2G or CWG way? If so none other than IAF will be held responsible for not doing their homework well. The poorly conceived Ghroshkov and Scorpene deals are still staring at the Nation.God Bless India.
