A US research ship -- Roger Revelle -- has made a port call here to understand ocean science in the Bay of Bengal`s international waters.

Chennai: A US research ship -- Roger Revelle -- has made a port call here to understand ocean science in the Bay of Bengal`s international waters.

The ship, which is a part of the `University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System,` arrived here on June 14 and will leave later this evening.

"Research vessels and scientists from the US and India work together to understand ocean science in the Bay of Bengal`s international waters," a release from the US Consulate said here.

"Ship visits represent an important opportunity to promote cooperation and enhance peace and stability in the Asia- Pacific region and they demonstrate the US commitment to regional partners also fostering growing bilateral relationship with India," Acting Consul General Nicholas Manring said.

Commenting about the visit of the ship, Ocean Research Department-Head, Frank Herr said it was an important moment in the history of scientific partnership between two countries.

"We hope to grow lasting scientific cooperation between our nations and acquire the knowledge to better forecast the initiation of the annual monsoons. We also look forward to the scientific discoveries and innovation that will come from joint work of these academic scientists," Herr said.
