New Delhi: Congress on Saturday appeared to disapprove of Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh for his comment that there are more temples in the country than toilets, saying "we respect the sanctity of every religious place".

"We respect the sanctity of every religious place irrespective of the community it belongs to. I do not know the statement attributed to Ramesh. Perhaps it could have been distorted and he is in the best position to explain."

"Congress party believes in sarvadharmasambhav. Equal respect for all religions. Equal respect for all religious places", party spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters.

BJP has also hit out at Ramesh saying he should not make such statements which "hurt the fine fabric of faith and religion" in the country.

Yes, to that extent he is right every home in this country has a temple whether there is an inhouse toilet or not.But it is this great tradition of having a temple in every house which is keeping this country going on for milleniums.Yes time is changing and the people are now seeing more toilets in their house than temples. but the results are catastrophic and in the todays world every house must have a toilet but the govt. must erect a severage disposal system in every village.

I believe only non-Hindu religions get respect from Congress. Congress respecting Hinduism is a big joke in itself.

`` there are more temples in the country than toilets`` - When Govt is spending 50 lakhs on one toilet ( great job done by Mr. Montek Singh), how will the number of toilets go up. Govt is working hard to collect money through reforms from public by increasing the prices of petrol, diesel, LPG, taxes etc. and once sufficient funds are available with the Govt., they will think of Toilets. In the meantime, let us keep going to temples , which out number toilets, and pray for these policy makers .
