New Delhi: Alluding to political motives
behind Rahul Gandhi`s padyatra in Bhatta-Parsaul, BJP on Friday
asked why the Congress leader was not visiting farmers in
other parts of the country who were also facing various
problems.

"Farmers exist outside Uttar Pradesh too, and they are
also facing problems. They exist in Andhra Pradesh also where
there was firing and shooting against them. Rahul Gandhi
should take leave from Bhatta-Parsaul and go to Srikakulam
where farmers were shot at," BJP spokesperson Nirmala
Sitharaman said.
In February, police had opened fire at farmers in
Srikakulam for protesting against a power plant coming up in
the area. Later, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh had issued
a show cause notice to the power plant on whether norms had
been flouted which had led to farmers` protests.

This is the Congress leader`s second visit to
Bhatta-Parsaul which has been in the news as farmers were
reportedly not paid enough compensation under the Land
Acquisition Act. The agitation against the Mayawati government
in Uttar Pradesh had turned violent and drawn the nation`s
attention. Subsequently, Rahul had visited the place.
BJP wondered why he was spending so much time on
farmers in Uttar Pradesh, which goes to polls early next year.

Sitharaman said, "We would like to know why he (Rahul)
has not taken his own party workers (with him). After all he
is not going to be there all the time. In his absence his
state unit leaders will have to carry on the fight of the
farmers."
