New Delhi: While targeting the UPA for not seeking consensus before they named tier candidate, JD(U) supremo Sharad Yadav on Thursday announced his party’s support to Pranab Mukherjee as the next President of India.
“We wanted consensus on the presidential nominee but it could not be reached…the ruling alliance had to play a role. When Dr Kalam was named, his candidature was discussed with everybody before his name was announced…it would have been better if they (UPA) would have talked to us earlier. We were not adamant on anything,” Yadav said.
Importantly, Yadav said that there was consensus on the name of Dr Kalam before he decided to back out of the race.
The JD(U) leader stressed that support to Pranab’s candidature should not be taken as support to the Congress and division in the NDA.
Yadav said the NDA is united and it is not the first time we are taking different stands. He referred to Shiv Sena’s support to Pratibha Patil to bring home his point.
“We feel that because it (President) is a constitutional post, it is not be construed as a matter of prestige,” he said.
