New Delhi: The government’s version of the Lokpal Bill, which was passed with a voice vote in Lok Sabha yesterday, has divided the key constituents of ruling UPA alliance led by the Congress.
Reports, Wednesday, claimed that Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee is unhappy with the certain provisions and the language of the Lokpal Bill that aims to curb corruption in public life.
The Trinamool Congress and the DMK had earlier joined the opposition parties in Lok Sabha in objecting to the enabling provision for the setting up of lokayuktas in states through the lokpal bill.
Now it has emerged that Mamata’s party is unhappy with the language used in Lok Sabha by the Congress during the Lokpal debate.
The party is expected to take a decision today whether it will support the Lokpal Bill in Rajya Sabha, when it is tabled tomorrow.
As per reports, Trinamool Congress MPs will today to decide the party’s future course of action.
Apparently, under pressure from the Trinamool and DMK, the government yesterday gave ground and made it optional for states to have lokayuktas in the proposed Lokpal legislation.
Both Trinamool and DMK said the move was against the federal structure and an attack on the autonomy of the states.
"Don`t undermine the state legislatures … don`t undermine ministers of states and don`t enter the field of state legislatures as it would be a dangerous proposition," said Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee said in Lok Sabha.
