Mumbai: First lady Indian Police Service
(IPS) officer, Kiran Bedi feels though there is need for women
to join police force but the unfortunate part is that they are
given soft postings, because of which we see less women in
force.

"They need women police officers but the unfortunate
part is that they are placed at the bottom of the pyramid and
they hardly exist and that is one of the reason why we see
less women," Bedi told a news agency here.

The retired IPS officer said "we do not want reservation
for women in police force but once you take them on merit,
ensure that they are given positions, power and that they are
visible."

Bedi who was Inspector General Prisons of Tihar Jail,
one of the world`s largest prison complexes also feels that
there is a need for better grooming of women in the force.

"Even though men and women are given equal training
but most of the time they are not posted equally," she said.

Bedi is the founder of two NGOs in India, `Navjyoti`
for welfare and preventive policing and `India Vision
Foundation` for prison reforms, drug abuse prevention and
child welfare.
