New Delhi: The state governments have been asked to increase representation of police to 35 percent in next five years from 5.6 percent, Minister of State for Home RPN Singh said Monday.
Speaking on the Mumbai gang rape in Rajya Sabha, Singh said: "Efforts are being made for gender sensitization in police."
"The representation of women in police is 5.6 percent now and we have appealed to states to increase it to 15 percent in next two years and take it to 35 percent in another three years," said Singh.
He said following the Delhi gang rape last year, all police stations in Delhi now have a women help desk.
"There are 511 all-women police stations across the country," he said.
