Hyderabad: Defence scientists are working towards development of laser weapon system in the country, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Director-General VK Saraswat said here on Thursday.

DRDO, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and academic institutions are involved in lot of work on laser technology for using lasers as weapons. There is lot of work going on with regard to laser weapons, Saraswat told reporters on the sidelines of the 22nd National Annual Conference of Indian Nuclear Society (INS) here.

"How to produce high-power lasers, how to get that kind of a narrow beam, miniatured version of a laser power device, all this is called Physics. But we have to graduate from Physics portion to the actual engineering portion that is the need of the hour," he stressed.

"It (developing laser weapons) is science getting into engineering and engineering into technology and technology getting into a product. You have to go through that cycle. Our scientists, engineers have to take through this gradual process of development. It’s a fairly complex subject," Saraswat explained.

He said the US has done some development on laser technology by having an air-borne system, adding, "They (US) have also some mobile system which are operational. But in terms of weapon system (through laser) in those places a lot more is required to be done."

Earlier, speaking on the topic Synergising India’s Electronic Development Efforts after inaugurating the 22nd National Annual Conference of Indian Nuclear Society (INS) here, Centre’s Principal Scientific Adviser R Chidambaram said strategic electronics in all its dimensions was extremely important and time had come to synergise electronic efforts in the country.

He stressed on the need for getting into electronic manufacturing adding, "We must go beyond Information Technology. There is need to synergising the electronic efforts which are very strong mission oriented agencies with the involvement of academia."

To all the scientists, Good job... If India does successed in making a laser defense, it would make India too secure... And O yes... to all scientists or who ever is making this stuff, no offense but DON``T U KNOW HOW TO KEEP YR MOUTH SHUT... Why do u tell everything u make out to the world??? Make weapons in private and surprise the world when ur at war... By now our enemies have heard this and are trying to making a couter measure against this weapon...

My dad`s friend works in L&T defense and he says that this are only some of the projects announced. They announce it because they want to show country`s strength.

Good Initiative by the scientists, but more room should be given to private participants to develop new equipments.

Pls have a little restraint in talking about an organisation in which great people like APJ KALAM has worked. We may ignore but we are secured because of whatever effort DRDO has put on. Be thankful for that.

These types of statements are very unfortunate against scientists, specially who are involved in security of the country.

Indians have achieved great things when they work abroad, say in the US. But what happens when they work in India? They`re faced with poor infrastructure, intra-organisational politics, lack of funding, punitive action for taking on calculated risks, corruption. In short, a non-supportive if not a bluntly hostile environment put up by their own countrymen. Until this ends, the probability that Indians will achieve great things in the defence sector is really very low!

This policy should have taken earlier. While Israil & China both are self reliance in defence strategy and able to operate various electronic defence equipments and apparatus, India should have done at first. Neighbouring countries are well equiped in handling very ultra modern defence technique and strategy. However, working in laser weapon is always welcome to tackle any chemical/atomic warplanes etc. Thanks to DRDO. Best wishes and great success for various laser weapons.
