Young MPs' visit to Pokhran cancelled

Jodhpur: The visit of young MPs, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, to Pokhran firing range to witness a war excercise on December 2 has been cancelled, defence ministry officials said.

The visit had been planned by the army to give an exposure to the young legislators to the capabilities and strengths of the force by showcasing the Army's prowess in desert warfare.

The visit was approved by the defence ministry according to which some of the law makers including Rahul, BJP's Pilibhit MP Varun Gandhi, Congress's Naveen Jindal and Meenakshi Natarajan, Jayant Chaudhary (RLD), Akhilesh Yadav (SP) and BJD's Kalikesh Singh Deo were to witness the ongoing 'Sudarshan Shakti' on December 2.

President Prathibha Patil and Defence Minister AK Antony would witness the war game exercise near Indo-Pak border on December 5 in Barmer.

Bhopal-based 21 Sudharshan Chakra Corps in collaboration with Jodhpur-based 12 Corps is holding the exercise that will last till mid-December.
