Washington: Facebook`s popularity is apparently fading among teenagers over the last one year and rivals like Twitter and Instagram are more preferred by the younger generation, a new survey has revealed.

According to Piper Jaffray`s semi-annual report on the habits of American teens, Facebook has lost its spot as the most important social network among teenagers, due to its size, privacy risks and tendency to incite drama.

The survey polled 8,650 teens and found that Facebook was considered more of a `social burden` as only 23 percent of teens deem it as the most important site, down from 42 percent last year, Huffington Post reports.

The survey revealed that Twitter`s popularity also seemed to cede with 26 percent teens favouring it this Fall compared to a full 30 percent in Spring 2013.

Facebook-owned Instagram was found to be the second most important social media service among teens after Twitter.

The report said that other social media platforms like Vine and Snapchat are also gaining popularity amongst teens, which have seen a growth from a meager 2 percent in 2012 to a 17 percent popularity share in 2013.
