Quarter of child porn images not deleted on Net sites

About 25 percent of child pornography images posted on the Internet have not been deleted in Japan; despite requests made last December for Internet service providers to do so.

Tokyo: About 25 percent of child
pornography images posted on the Internet have not been
deleted in Japan; despite requests made last December for
Internet service providers to do so, an analysis by the
country`s police agency has shown Friday.

The National Police Agency (NPA) said the Internet
Hotline Center, commissioned by the agency, asked these
providers to delete 90 packages of child pornography images
last December but 23 of them were not deleted.

It took an average of 7.7 days for providers to delete
the 67 packages, the NPA said.

The NPA has called on government ministries and
agencies concerned to introduce a system to block users from
accessing child pornography sites to stem the spread of child
pornography on the Internet.

The NPA is also calling for blocking access soon,
given that users can quickly copy images once they are posted
on the Internet.

The government plans to draw up a set of measures
against child pornography in June based on guidelines to be
mapped out by working teams at the ministries and agencies
concerned.

Japan is facing international criticism for being a
supplier of online child pornography because it does not
prohibit the possession of such images.
