New Delhi: Micro-blogging site Twitter has apologized for resetting the passwords of its users on Thursday.

The San Francisco-based company announced that a large number of its active users` passwords were accidentally reset while conducting a routine security screening over concerns that some accounts may have been breached by hackers.

"In instances when we believe an account may have been compromised, we reset the password and send an email letting the account owner know this has happened," Twitter said on Thursday.

"In this case, we unintentionally reset passwords of a larger number of accounts, beyond those that we believed to have been compromised."
