Washington: Internet corporation Yahoo had been reportedly forced into furnishing user data to the US-led National Security Agency`s Prism programme following court orders in 2008.
According to Huffington Post, Yahoo, which has long maintained that it is not part of the surveillance programme, had fought against the spy programme`s request had argued that NSA`s order violated the constitutional right of the user against unreasonable searches and seizures.
NSA`s spy programme, which required Internet giants like Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter, Skype and others to provide ` metadata ` about their users which included emails, photos, videos, etc. compelled the internet services to either furnish data or face court.
Twitter too fought against the ` snoop data` requests and argued that it has less data on users compared to Google and Facebook due to it being a relatively new site.
Yahoo General Counsel Ron Bell denied being part of the Prism programme and said that the company does not voluntarily disclose user information unless in response to specific demands.
In light of the recent revelations about the internet giants being part of the US snooping programme, companies like Twitter, Microsoft, Google and Facebook have asked the government to allow them to publish information about the number of secret requests received by them for customers` data, the report added.
