24-hr `General Strike` called in Manipur

Imphal: A 24-hour general strike will be
called on Tuesday in Manipur by a local committee in protest
against the killing of a father and his son by militants, a
spokesman of the committee said.

The strike would begin from midnight tonight.
Joint Action Committee (JAC) has called the strike against
the killing of PHED chowkidar Ibombcha Singh and his son
Yaiphu.

The duo had been abducted from their official quarter at
Irilbung in Imphal East district area on December 7 last by
militants who demanded Rs 20 lakh from PHED for their release.

Their bullet-riddled bodies were found at Yairipok area
in Thoubal district on December 16 last, official sources
said.

The JAC which has called the general strike is demanding
the arrest of the culprits and appointment of next kin of the
victim in government department. It was also demanding
adequate security to water supply offices in the state.
How could the militants kill Ibomcha Singh, who was not a
regular employee but on work charge and his son, asked the
PHED Minister, Mr T.N. Haokip, saying it was really ‘inhuman’
and kidnappers were ‘’criminals’’.

The sources said some militants, who called themselves as
Kangleipak Communist Party-Mobil Task Force (Kesho faction),
had kidnapped the victims from their official quarters at
Irilbung area,
Angry local residents of Irilbung set afire effigies of
militants and PHED chief engineer yesterday while blocking
road between Imphal and Irilbung.

Water supply to both valley and hills in Manipur was
stopped indefinitely from yesterday by angry employees of the
PHED to protest the killing.
