Gangtok: More than seventy per cent of the house damage compensation amount for September-18 earthquake victims has been disbursed in Sikkim, an official said on Tuesday.

"The compensation has been disbursed among seventy per cent listed victims who have claimed various degrees of house damage," Relief Commissioner B K Kharel said.

Disbursement of all such compensation would be completed by October 15, he said.

The total amount claimed by people who suffered house damages was about Rs 50 crore as per figures compiled from the districts, he said.

Any complaint against inadequate or late disbursement of compensation would be verified and erring officials punished, he said.

While in North Sikkim district, the compensation is being handed over by the area MLA and panchayats, in other districts the job is being carried out by block-level officials.
