AGP for `thorough` CBI probe into N C hills funds scam

Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Wednesday urged Governor J B Patnaik to ask the CBI to probe the role of ministers, MLAs and MPs in the multi-crore North Cachar Hill District Autonomous Council fund scandal.

Guwahati: Opposition Asom Gana Parishad
(AGP) on Wednesday urged Governor J B Patnaik to ask the CBI to probe
the role of ministers, MLAs and MPs in the multi-crore North
Cachar Hill District Autonomous Council fund scandal.

Though the state government had issued a notification
for a CBI probe into the scam, it had limited the scope of the
investigation, the AGP claimed in a memorandum to the governor
and a `thorough` probe into the matter by CBI.

Such limited scope in terms of duration, departments
and terms of cases would negate all efforts to bring the
culprits of the entire scam to book, the memorandum said.

Stating that the National Investigation Agency (NIA),
which had initially probed the matter, had pointed to
involvement of `public servants`, AGP demanded that CBI be
given a free hand to investigate into the involvement of
bureaucrats as well as ministers, MPS and MLAs.

Recent media reports said there was "evidence of
political interference so that the CBI does not reach the
higher-ups in the political and administrative hierarchy," the
memorandum said.

A probe with limited scope would be an exercise in
futility allowing only the tip of the iceberg to come to the
notice of the people, AGP said.
