Another major blow to Congress as six Tripura MLAs quit party, to join TMC

Agartala: There seems to be no end to the Congress' woes as six out of its nine Tripura MLAs on Tuesday handed over their resignation letters to Assembly Speaker announcing their decision to disassociate from the party.

According to the report, the MLAs wrote to Assembly Speaker Ramendra K Nath today to disassociate them from the Congress party. All the six MLAs and expelled Congress MLA Biswa Bandhu Sen will be joining All India Trinamool Congress.

The development comes a day after Trinamool Congress general secretary Mukul Roy held a closed-door meeting in Agartala with the six rebel Congress MLAs of Tripura to explore the possibility of inducting them into the party.

The MLAs whom Roy met had fallen foul of the Congress high command after they criticised the party leadership for entering into a tie-up with the Left in West Bengal saying it reflected badly on the party's position as the principal opposition party in Tripura.

The Congress high command had suspended MLA Sudip Roy Barman who led the five disgruntled legislators.

The move has come as a major blow to the Congress after its two CWC members Ajit Jogi and Gurudas Kamat quit the party recently.

Earlier today, Congress MLA Biswa Bandhu Sen was expelled from the primary membership of the party for six years due to his anti-party activities.

Sen was one of the seven rebels Congress MLA, who in protest against the AICC's decision of Congress-Left alliance in West Bengal, was to officially join the TMC to form an opposition party here.

Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Birajit Sinha viewed that those leaving the Congress were not attached to the party's ideologies.
