APSCW expresses concern at rising crime graph against women
Itanagar: Sixty cases of rape and 160 cases of crime against women were reported in Arunachal Pradesh last year, Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) said in its report on the latest crime statistics of the state.
Expressing concern at the rise in the crime graph against women in the state, the APSCW urged the state government to initiate corrective measures to stop atrocities against women immediately.
In a memorandum to Chief Minister Nabam Tuki yesterday, a copy of which was made available to the press, the APSCW urged him to initiate appropriate measures to reverse the trend.
As part of the measures to check crime against women, APSCW chairperson Gumri Ringu demanded independent functioning of judiciary, recruitment of more women police personnel and opening of separate women’s cell in every police station to handle cases of crime relating to women and children in a more effective way.
She also suggested that bail should not be granted in heinous crimes like rape and murder and further called for providing security to the affected and their families.
Ringu in the memorandum demanded for appointment of child marriage prevention officer under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act 2006 in order to implement the Act in letter and spirit and also to check child marriages.
The commission said that attack on media, especially on Arunachal Times Associate Editor Tongam Rina on July 15 last had deeply shocked the people.
The Commission requested the law enforcing agencies to immediately book the culprits and award exemplary punishment as per law of the land.
