Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday thanked the people of Guwahati for reposing faith in the Congress which emerged victorious in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation polls.

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday thanked the people of Guwahati for reposing faith in the Congress which emerged victorious in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation polls.

"The Congress victory in the polls has shown that the people have faith only in our party and they believe that the Congress can only resolve their problems," the Chief Minister said in a statement.

"We are morally responsible to solve the various problems being faced by the people of Guwahati and ensure all-round development of the city," he said.

The Congress has bagged 19 out of the 31 wards followed by the BJP with eleven. The opposition Asom Gana Parishad managed to win only one seat.
The party would focus on resolving issues related to artificial floods, the drainage system, condition of roads and drinking water, among others.

Referring to the increase in the number of seats bagged by the BJP, the Chief Minister claimed that the party did not made inroads into the Congress votebank, but managed to get the AGP votes as the people were totally disillusioned with the regional party.

This was best ever result for the Congress in the municipal polls, the Chief Minister added.
