‘Assam encroaches Meghalaya territory, later retracts’

Assam government officials allegedly encroached Meghalaya territory, occupying a sub-health centre and a school building but later vacated today after a protest by Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.

Shillong: Assam government officials
allegedly encroached Meghalaya territory, occupying a
sub-health centre and a school building but later vacated
today after a protest by Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul
Sangma.

"Some officials of Assam government occupied a
sub-health centre and school building near Psiar of Jaintia
Hills district bordering Assam`s Karbi Anglong district a
couple of days back," Sangma told reporters here.

Today they vacated the hospital and school, he said.

He said following the reports of encroachment, he
spoke to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi twice and apprised
the matter to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram last night.

Terming the move of Assam government as "uncalled
for", Sangma said such incidents disturb the conducive
atmosphere required for the proposed discussions on the
boundary dispute between the two states.

While the chief minister asserted that the situation
along the border areas were normal, he informed that the chief
ministers of the two states are likely to discuss the boundary
dispute on Saturday.

Meghalaya government has also suggested a meeting of
the administration officials of Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills and
Assam`s Karbi Anglong district "to get rid of the mistrust".
