Assam: Indefinite curfew imposed in Karimganj

Indefinite curfew was imposed from Badarpur to Bhanga in Assam`s Karimganj district after local people turned violent.

Karimganj: Indefinite curfew was imposed
from Badarpur to Bhanga in Assam`s Karimganj district after
local people turned violent and burnt down 13 houses following
the recovery of the body of a kidnapped college student this
evening, a senior district official said.
The curfew was imposed from 6.30 pm from Badarpur to
Bhanga as the situation went beyond control, district
deputy commissioner Jatin Borgiary told agency.

The body of the kidnapped student Aharar Ahmed was dug
out from a remote area at Bhadra, under Karimganj police
station, around 5.30 pm on the basis of leads given by five
persons, including four women, picked up for interrogation in
connection with the abduction, Borgiary said.

After Aharar`s body was recovered, the local people
turned violent and set ablaze 13 houses at Bhanga protesting
the killing of the Karimganj College BA third year student
kidnapped five days ago from Karimganj, official sources said.

As the mob continued to indulge in arson, the district
administration imposed the indefinite curfew, the sources
said.
Ahmed`s body had been sent for post-mortem and
investigations were on to identity his abductors and the cause
behind his abduction, they said.

Two persons had been arrested in connection with the
violence, they said adding security has been stepped up and
the DIG Southern Range B K Gupta was camping at Bhanga to
control the situation.
