Guwahati: Two leaders of a major students
organisation has demanded Rs 28 lakh from a cement company
threatening that otherwise it would launch an agitation to
prevent the firm from setting up a plant, Assam Industry and
Commerce Minister Pradyut Bordoloi alleged on Saturday.
Bordoloi, without naming the students` organisation or
the leaders, said they had demanded the money from STAR cement
company which proposes to set up a Rs 250 crore plant near
here and has promised to provide direct employment to one
thousand persons from the fringe villages.

An unhealthy trend has emerged recently in the state
whereby groups of vested interest attempt to extort money from
industrialists proposing to set up units and if refused,
organise movements against proposed industries, Bordoloi told
reporters here.
"If this trend continues, the future of industry in
Assam is bleak. The government, however, will not remain
silent but take stern action against such vested interests,"
the minister said.

He also appealed to industrialists to immediately
lodge an FIR with the police when they receive such threats
and the government would follow it up, he added.

The minister said the state was poised to receive an
investment of Rs 16000 crore and as could not allow this
situation to continue.
