Dhubri: A major mishap was averted on Saturday
when a boy playing with a grenade that his mother had picked
up, mistaking it as a toy, threw it outside his house causing
it to explode, in lower Assam`s Korkrajhar district today.

However, there were no casualties, police said.
Zohora Bibi (40) had yesterday picked up a hand
grenade from a paddy field at Khorkhori, under Kajigaon police
station, mistaking it to be a toy, sources said.

Zohra brought the grenade to her home and kept it
inside an almirah and her 14-year-old son, a student of
Class VII, had taken it out to play this morning.

Seeing the safety pin in the grenade, Zohra suspected
it to be an explosive and told her son to throw it out, the
sources said.

After the boy hurled it towards an unpopulated area,
the grenade exploded creating a crater and burnt down the
nearby betal nut and coconut trees.

So powerful was the grenade that had it exploded in
Bibi`s house it would have caused largescale destruction, the
sources said.
The local people said on Thursday three motor-cycle
borne suspected NDFB militants met with a minor accident in
the area and the grenade may have been carried by
them but was accidently left behind.

Investigations were on, the sources added.
