BRUs seek excuses not to return-Mizoram

Mizoram on Wednesday accused Bru refugees of making excuses every time the state government and the Union Home Ministry made arrangements for their return to the state from Tripura relief camps.

Aizawl: Mizoram on Wednesday accused Bru refugees
of making excuses every time the state government and the
Union Home Ministry made arrangements for their return to the
state from Tripura relief camps as no Bru family moved out on
the second day of the proposed repatriation today.

Repatriation of 462 Bru families had been fixed for five
days since May 11, but Bru leaders had began making last
minute excuses without airing any protest earlier, Mizoram
Home Minister, R Lalzirliana said.

Earlier in November last, Bru refugees boycotted the
repatriation process, he said.

"I think they do not want to return," the minister said.

Meanwhile, not a single Bru crossed the Mizoram-Tripura
border since yesterday, the day for the commencement of the
repatriation even as all arrangements for their resettlement
and free ration were made by the state government.

The union home ministry has already agreed to disburse Rs
80,000 to each Bru family on their return to Mizoram and would
also be given free ration for nine months.

Elvis Chorkhy, President of the Mizoram Bru Displaced
People`s Forum (MBDPF), demanded that the Rs 1,500 travel
expenses for each family should be given in advance.
