The Nagland government will tap phones of businessmen in capital Dimapur to check extortion in view of increased activities by militant groups and criminal gangs from outside the state, official sources said on Saturday.

gangs from outside the state, official sources said on Saturday.

The decision was taken at a high level meeting at Dimapur
presided over by state Home Minister Imkong Imchen yesterday
and attended by representatives from the business community.
Imchen later told newsmen that the business community
agreed to the government?s proposal for tapping since demands
for extortion were made frequently through the phones.

Phone tapping would help law enforcing agencies to track
the extortionists and arrest them, he said adding if the
measure succeeded it would be extended to other parts of the
state in a phased manner.

The minister said besides the Naga underground activists,
militant groups and criminal groups from outside the state
were `very active` at Dimapur and indulged in extortion
drives.

The UPDS outfit based in nighbouring Karbi Anglong
district of Assam and a newly-floated splinter Karbi armed
group operating in and around Dimapur. Besides, the four
criminals arrested by the police on Thursday from Dimapur for
extorting were found to be from Manipur and Tripura.
Today`s meeting was attended among others by home
commissioner Mathung Kithan, DGP K Kire and top officials from
Assam Rifles and CRPF, the sources said.
