Chamling bashes opposition at party forum

Gangtok: Basking at the uninterrupted run
at power in Sikkim for 16 years and counting, Chief Minister
Pawan Kumar Chamling today slammed the opposition as a virtual
non-entity compared to the `elephant`, he said referring to
his own Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF).

"The opposition in Sikkim is a non-entity and
comprises the people with narrow vision which is amply
reflected in their little presence on the political landscape
of Sikkim.

"The SDF is, on the other hand, is an elephant much
bigger in size and longevity with a purpose in life," he said
at a function at Jorethang in West Sikkim on the occasion of
the 17th foundation day of the ruling party.

Chamling hit out at the opposition saying "the
opposition may have be wait for a long time, may be 15
years, to attain power in Sikkim.

Apparently taking a dig at his bete noire Nar Bahadur
Bhandari for alleged excesses against the people during his
government between 1979-1994, Chamling felicitated 230 people
who were jailed by the Bhandari government on `fake` charges.

Earlier, the ruling party adopted 16 resolutions at
the foundation day celebrations seeking to make Sikkim a
tribal state, increase in the strength of the state
legislature to 40 and income tax exemption for old settlers.
