Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Tuesday demanded strengthening of the ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) by creating proper infrastructure for implementation of work.
"This ministry has no proper infrastructure for implementation of works. There is shortage of officials and experts, as a result of which it could not work properly. We want it should be strengthened for the development of the region," Sarkar told reporters.
He said, the state government demanded for formation of an engineering team in the ministry headed by a retired engineer so that it could clear the projects in due time.
"Now it takes longer time to clear the projects as a result of which the project costs go high when it is cleared," he said.
"Formation of DONER was not useful. During the tenure of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, we wanted a cell within the Prime Minister's office so that he could be aware about the facts of the region. A forum of the Chief Ministers of the North-East was formed with Tarun Gogoi as convener, which demanded the cell initially, but later many of us thought that if a separate ministry is formed, it would be useful", Sarkar said.
He said, now proper infrastructure of the ministry should be build up for proper development of this backward region.
