Guwahati: At least eight teachers were injured on Thursday when police resorted to lathicharge and blank fire to prevent them from marching on to the capital complex here.
According to police, members of the Non-provincial School Teachers Association had planned a "Dispur (state secretariat) Chalo" programme demanding provincialisation of more than 400 non-provincial schools.
As protestors were stopped from proceeding, they became violent and the police resorted to lathicharge, using tear gas and blank firing, they said.
The eight injured teachers were admitted to the Gauhati Medical college hospital.
The president of the teachers body, Moinul Haque Choudhury condemned the police action and vowed to carry on the agitation during the ensuing state assembly session.
He also demanded regularisation of the jobs of more than 9000 teachers in the non-provincial schools.
