Shillong: Law enforcers have arrested five persons for illegally collecting money from coal trucks on national highway 62 in Meghalaya, an official said Monday.

One Prodeep Momin was arrested yesterday at Jamgaon Sorokpara in East Garo Hills district while he was collecting money from trucks with fake documents, while two of his accomplices fled, deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi said.

Earlier, four persons have been arrested on the highway for similar crime this month as authorities stepped up their crackdown on the menace.

The DC said coal monopoly markets at Rongjeng and Dobu have been stopped, while a weigh bridge and a parking lot on the highway closed down.
