Former Central Excise official sentenced to four years in jail

A retired Central Excise Commissioner has been sentenced by a CBI court to four years of imprisonment for causing a loss of about Rs 27 crore to the government exchequer.

Shillong: A retired Central Excise
Commissioner has been sentenced by a CBI court to four years
of imprisonment for causing a loss of about Rs 27 crore to the
government exchequer.

The Special CBI Judge here convicted L R Mithran, IRS,
the then Commissioner, Central Excise, Shillong and sentenced
her to four years of imprisonment with a fine of Rs 20,000.

A chargesheet was filed by the CBI on December 31, 2001
against two accused under various sections of the Prevention
of Corruption Act. One of the accused later died.

"The investigation revealed that accused Mithran, while
posted as Commissioner, Central Excise, Shillong passed an
adjudication order in favour of Kitply Industries, slicing
down the evaded excise duty from Rs 36 crore to Rs 9 crore,
thereby causing a loss of Rs 27 crore (approx) to the
government. She has since retired from service," a CBI
spokesperson said.

On completion of trial, the Special Judge, CBI, Shillong
convicted the accused, he said.
