Shillong: Meghalaya Police on Tuesday
confirmed the formation of a yet another `militant` outfit in
the state after arresting its founder from state’s West Khasi
Hills district.

Kala Mia, a Bangladeshi national was arrested
yesterday near Borsora along the Bangla border when he had
come to extort money from a businessman, police said.

Mia had floated the Garo National United Front (GNUF)
with tribals residing in Bangladesh as members of the outfit,
they said.

Police said the group had been on an extortion drive
in the coal belt areas of the state.

Police was on the look-out of Mia for quite some time
now for his alleged involvement in various cases such as
motorcycle theft and other criminal activities.

Mia had telephoned a businessman and demanded a hefty
sum of money prompting police to lay a trap.

Since this January, police have neutralised two
nascent outfits in Meghalaya but yet to net another.

Police say the groups are formed to make easy money
through extortion.
