Govt assures relief for villagers affected by BDR firing

The Meghalaya government today assured relief and rehabilitation for villagers displaced following repeated exchange of fire between the BSF and the Bangladesh Rifles along the border.

Shillong: The Meghalaya government today
assured relief and rehabilitation for villagers displaced
following repeated exchange of fire between the BSF and the
Bangladesh Rifles along the border.

"The deputy commissioner (of Jaintia Hills district) has
been asked to prepare a detailed report about the loss and the
required relief for the villagers. Once we get the report, we
will attend to the requirements," Chief Minister D D Lapang
told reporters here about the measures taken up for the people
of Muktapur village.

Lapang said a government team led by Revenue Minister
R C Laloo is camping at Muktapur to access the situation.

The chief minister said he had apprised Bangladesh
premier Shiekh Hasina of the matter and she has taken note of
it.

"Normally, in case of such international conflicts, the
state governments move the Centre for intervention. I have
gone beyond that and took up the matter with the Bangladesh
Prime Minister during my recent visit to Dhaka," Lapang said
rebuffing Opposition claims that the state government was
reacting casually to repeated incidents of BDR firing which
have triggered panic among the villagers.
