Imphal: Congress MLA Irengbam Hemochandra was on Thursday elected speaker of Manipur legislative assembly.
Assembly secretariat sources said Hemochandra, a former urban development minister, was the lone candidate who filed papers for the post of the speaker which fell vacant following the death of former speaker S Budhichandra last September.
Soon after the announcement of the election of Hemochandra by deputy speaker Lokeshore Singh, the new speaker was escorted to the chair by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and opposition leader Radhabinod Koijam of the Nationalist
Congress Party (NCP).
Hemocrachandra, a post graduate in political science from St Stephen`s College of Delhi university, is the son of former deputy chief and well-known socialist party leader I Tompok Singh who died in a place crash in Manipur some 15 years ago.
