Kolkata campus violence: Oppn demands arrest of those named in FIR

The CPI(M) demanded immediate arrest of all those named in the FIR for the February 12 Garden Reach violence in which a police officer was killed.

Kolkata: The CPI(M) on Saturday demanded immediate arrest of all those named in the FIR for the February 12 Garden Reach violence in which a police officer was killed.
"A sub-inspector (SI) of police died on duty during the Garden Reach violence. If all those named in the FIR are not arrested, it will give an impression that no rule of law exists in West Bengal," CPI(M) politburo member Biman Bose said. Bose, who is also the party`s state secretary, criticised the "lackadaisical attitude" of the government and demanded that the guilty be punished. Congress leader OP Mishra demanded that state Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim should immediately be dismissed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, "for his dubious role in the Garden Reach violence". BJP leader Shamik Bhattacharya alleged that there was no rule of law in the state, which was evident from the state government`s delay in arresting all those named in the FIR. SI Tapas Chowdhury, died in a clash between Congress and Trinamool party workers during a college election here. Search is on for Trinamool councillor Mohammed Iqbal and Congress leader Moktar of Garden Reach, whose names figure in the FIR. PTI
