Lokur appointed Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court

Justice Madan B Lokur was today appointed as the new Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court.

New Delhi: Justice Madan B Lokur was today
appointed as the new Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court.

56-year-old Lokur succeeds Justice R S Garg who retired
earlier this month.

It is learnt that the Supreme Court Collegium had earlier
recommended the name of Justice Lokur as Chief Justice of the
Karnataka High Court, but since he reportedly expressed his
unwillingness, he was sent to the Gauhati High Court.

Lokur was appointed as Additional Solicitor General of
India in July, 1998 and later appointed as an Additional Judge
of Delhi High Court in February, 1999. He became a Permanent
Judge of Delhi High Court in July, 1999.

He was elevated as the Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High
Court on February 13, 2010 after the then Chief Justice A P
Shah superannuated.

Lokur continued as Acting Chief Justice till May 21 when
Justice Dipak Misra was appointed as the Chief Justice of the
Delhi High Court.
