Manipuris protest against blockade of National Highways

More than one thousand Manipuris, under the banner of `Greater Guwahati Manipur Association`, today demanded intervention of the PM to lift the blockade by the Nagas on the two highways leading to Manipur and Nagaland.

Guwahati: More than one thousand Manipuris,
under the banner of `Greater Guwahati Manipur Association`,
today demanded intervention of the Prime Minister, Manmohan
Singh to lift the blockade by the Nagas on the two highways
leading to Manipur and Nagaland.

The Association, which brought out a rally here, in a
memorandum to Singh said the blockade had led to acute
shortage of essential commodities leading to immense
difficulties for the people of Manipur.

President of the Association Y Dhan Kumar Singha told
reporters that they had urged the prime minister to ensure
that the blockade on NH 52 leading to Imphal from Assam and on
NH 39 leading to Nagaland from Assam be lifted immediately.

The blockade which began on May five following the
controversy sparked off by NSCN(IM) leader T Muivah`s proposed
visit to his native village in Manipur.

This is a humanitarian crisis and the Prime Minister
must immediately intervene to end the sufferings of the
people, he added.
