Shillong: Three policemen were killed and two others injured, one of them critically, when militants ambushed a security team before taking away their weapons this
morning in Meghalaya`s East Garo Hills district.

Heavily armed militants of the banned NDFB and Garo
National Liberation Army laid the ambush at around 6 am near
Thapa Darenchi, about 12 km from Mendipathar in the district
bordering Assam.

It was earlier reported that those killed were SWAT
commandos but later they were confirmed to be policemen.

"The five-men security team were conducting
anti-dacoity rounds. It was raining heavily. When they were
returning, somebody informed them that a dacoity was going on
nearby. They were climbing a slope when around 10 militants
fired at them with AK rifles from all directions, indicating
that the policemen were trapped," a senior police official
said.

Three personnel were killed on the spot and two
injured.

The militants snatched an AK rifle, one INSAS rifle, a
carbine, three bullet proof jackets and some ammunition from
the patrol party, police said.

The slain personnel have been identified as havildar
Blein Makharoh, constable Duke M sangma and constable
Johnhigbirth Marak.

Two constables, GG Momin and M Rymbai, sustained
serious injuries in the attack and were taken to a nearby
hospital.

One of them, Momin, was stated to be critical and was
rushed to Guwahati.

East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi told
a news agency that additional police force and an Army team has been
rushed to the area for combing operations.
